The kinematics of the Wobble8
The Wobble8 belongs to a family of kinematic objects called kaleidocycles: closed chains of tetrahedral links that can be turned through themselves endlessly. The shape they make is a figure eight — infinite, with no beginning and no end.
Why it works
Each link is a slightly flattened tetrahedron. Six of them are joined at their edges so that every joint can rotate freely. The chain is closed: the last link meets the first again. That makes the motion cyclic rather than linear — you can run through it as often as you like, and it always returns to the same configuration.
A figure eight that turns through itself has no "forward" and no "back".
Why it calms
There is a kind of motion people love to repeat endlessly — no goal, no progress, just the rhythm. Clicking, rocking, turning. The Wobble8 serves exactly that urge: a closed motion that does not want to stop and never gets "done". For many people that is exactly the point where thinking gets quieter.
What we changed
The classic kaleidocycle sticks a little and needs some play. We built ball bearings into the joints so the motion becomes smooth and stays that way — an example of how 3D printing and conventional mechanics can complement each other.
